CSCI 3300 Internship in Computer Science Requirements
CSCI 3300 - Internship in Computer Science - This course is designed to give students an opportunity to gain practical experience in the computer science career field by working with a participating employing firm or organization. The student will be supervised by a faculty member acting as a liaison between the University and the employing organization to ensure compliance with specific learning and experience requirements. The employment can be either paid or unpaid, and normally would include practical experience spread over one academic term or summer. A maximum of 3 hours of credit from CSCI 3300 or CSCI 3390 can be used toward the computer science major. May be repeated once.
Prerequisite: Upper division standing, minimum 12 hours of Computer Science completed and approved by both the department and employers providing the practicum/internship experience. Grade: Pass/Fail
Student Responsibilities:
- Meet with the faculty to discuss the internship and come to a decision if the internship is creditworthy.
- Once the student arrives at the internship site, after meeting with the immediate supervisor, submit a brief job description, statement of educational goals, and a list of objectives to accomplish those goals to Computer Science Intern Coordinator.
- Write weekly reports indicating which of the objectives and goals have been accomplished. These will be submitted as a mid-term summary report to the Computer Science Intern Coordinator at the end of the first summer session or by the 8th week of a regular semester and included with the final report described in 4 as follows. A grade of incomplete will be given until the final report is submitted.
- Write a summary report at the end of the internship describing the experience and objectives addressing the achievement of goals.
- Register with Career Placement Services to sign Co-op/Internship Agreement.
Department Responsibilities:
Computer Science Intern Coordinator will meet with student to discuss internship and approve or disapprove internship.
Have student register with Career Placement Services to sign Co-op/Internship Agreement.
Advise student to register for class while performing internship.
Review and respond to reports and assign final grade.
Refer all potential employers of interns to register with Career Placement Services.
Company Responsibilities:
- Register with Career Placement Services as a potential employer of interns.
- Assist the student in describing his/her duties, goals and objectives.
- Verify that student has been performing the duties as set forth in the goals and objectives.
- Send a copy of the final evaluation to the faculty.
