Bobba, Praveen and Meng, Xiannong, "Load Sharing Under Windows NT", Technical Report CS-99-19, September 11, 1999.

We report the work we have done in load sharing and load monitoring facility under the WindowsNT 4.0 system. Load sharing among workstations and servers allow more efficient use of the resources and reduces the delay that a typical task would have to experience.

Chen, Zhixiang, Meng, Xiannong, Zhu, Binhai, Fowler, Richard, ``On Building an Intelligent WWW Search Engine with On-Line Learning Algorithms'', Technical Report CS-99-18, May 1999

We establish a connection between on-line learning theory and search engine construction based on membership, query, target concept and ranking assumptions. With applications of Winnow and virtual-variable methods, we show the bound on the number queries needed to identify any collection of documents represented by a disjunction of a set of attributes. We also describe the design and implementation of a prototype search engine based on the theory we developed.

Meng, Xiannong, Chen, Zhixiang, Fowler, Richard, Fox, Richard and Lawrence-Fowler, Wendy ``Data Visualization, Indexing and Mining Engine --- A Parallel Computing Architecture for Information Processing Over the Internet'', Technical Report CS-98-17, February 1998

DaVIME (Data Visualization, Indexing and Mining Engine) is a software architecture that does data visualization, indexing and mining in an integraged environment. It serves user's various types of information requests by invoking different components of DaVIME, many of which work in parallel such as search, indexing and categorization.

Fox, Richard and Bilke,Christian, ``Automated Pascal Syntactic Debugging: The Semicolon Expected Error'', Technical Report CS-97-14, August 1997

An automated debugging system that takes a Turbo Pascal source program with a semicolon expected syntax error and determines the cause of the error suggesting a means of fixing the error. This paper is one element of a larger effort to implement automated debugging systems.

Meng, X., "EMUNET: Design and Implementation -- A Debugging Aid for Distributed Programs in TCP/IP Based Network", Technical Report CS-96-12, May 22, 1996

Debugging a distributed programs is very challenging, due to its non-determinism of execution. The EMUNET library makes this task easier by emulating the network functions in a single program. Programmers have the control of how and when delivering the inter-process communications message. After debug is finished, the program can link to the actual network library to work in real environment.

Fowler, R. H., Kumar, A. & Williams, J. L., "Visualizing and browsing World Wide Web semantic content using the Document Explorer", Technical Report CS-95-11 (cross listed as: NAG9-551-5), Oct. 1995

The Document Explorer system is used to create a visual browsing environment for WWW documents based on semantic content, rather than on link structure such as used in other WWW browsing and visualization tools.

Fox, R. and Ochoa, G., "Mechanical Diagnosis Using Classification: A Brake Diagnostic System", Technical Report CS-95-10, Jul. 1995

This paper presents a system to perform automated mechanical diagnosis of a car's brake system by using the Generic Tasks of Hierarchical Classification and Routine Recognition. A malfunction hierarchy is traversed in an attempt to establish the most likely malfunction hypotheses provided a description of the car's current condition as input.

Fox, R., Bilke, C., and Mendoza, J., "Automated Debugging of Syntax Errors", Technical Report CS-95-9, Aug. 1995

In this paper, automated debugging of syntax errors in Turbo Pascal programs is considered. The debugging process is compared to diagnosis. Inference types are discussed along with the knowledge of Pascal that is required to perform these inferences. Two prototype automated debugging systems are introduced and demonstrated by an example.

Meng, X., "Synchronizations and Rollbacks in Optimistic Distributed Simulation Scheme", Technical Report CS-95-8, Jun. 1995

This paper describes a study of coordination issues in optimistic distributed simulations that are implemented over a loosely coupled environment. It also shows the effects of rollback frequencey, message intensity, communication overhead on performance.

Kumar, A. & Fowler, R. H. "A spring modeling algorithm to position nodes of an undirected graph in three dimensions", Technical Report CS-94-7 (cross listed as: NAG9-551-4), May 1994

The spring embedder algorithm is a heuristic approach to graph drawing based on a mechanical system in which a graph's edges are replaced by springs and vertices are replaced by rings. This paper reports an extension of the spring embedder algorithm from two to three dimensions.

Fowler, R. H., Fowler, W. A. L. , Flores, I., & Longoria, G., "Visualization in information retrieval", Technical Report CS-93-6 (cross listed as: NAG9-551-3), Mar. 1993

This report briefly reviews literature in visualization and human computer interaction that is relevant to interactive information retrieval. The report reviews more extensively work to date that has explored visualization in information retrieval and suggests future directions that the application of visualization in information retrieval might take.

This report presents an extended rationale for the use of PFNETs in interactive information retrieval systems, reviewing work in elucidating conceptual structures using PFNETs, and presents relatively efficient algorithm is for PFNET(q=n-1, r=) which facilitates derivation of PFNETs from text in an interactive environment.

Fowler, R. H., Wilson, B. A., & Fowler, W. A. L. , "Information Navigator: An information system using associative networks for display and retrieval", Technical Report CS-92-4 (cross listed as: NAG9-551-1), Jan. 1992

The Information Navigator utilizes visually displayed graphic structures and a direct manipulation interface style to supply an integrated environment for information retrieval. Visualization of large network structures makes use of fisheye views and overview diagrams to help overcome some of the inherent difficulties of orientation and navigation in large information structures.
