Mentoring Program Funding Increased
Mentoring Program Funding Increased to include Engineering Freshman.
The popular mentoring program for freshman computer science majors will now be open to all computer science and engineering students. Increased funding will be provided to Dr. Richard Fowler in Computer Science and Dr. Heinrich Foltz in Electrical Engineering for the 2006-2007 academic year to expand the existing program. “We are very pleased that the Texas Educational Technology Consortium has again selected the University of Texas – Pan American to receive funding for this program. I think TETC recognizes the importance of a freshman-oriented program for computer science and engineering students. They are challenging programs and the first year is perhaps the most critical”, Dr. Fowler said. The mentoring program brings small groups of entering freshmen together with junior and senior students who provide guidance, tutoring, and all forms of assistance to members of the group. The program also sponsors a semester-long speaker series targeting freshman interests, with speakers about the student’s major curricula, career opportunities, and current projects in students’ major departments.
