Graduate Programs in Computer Science and Information Technology

The UTPA Department of Computer Science provides a wide range of opportunities for graduate level study, offering degrees in both computer science and information technology. Faculty members conduct research on topics as diverse as bioinformatics, wireless networks, image processing, and computer algorithms. There is ample opportunity for students to become involved in research projects by pursuing the Department’s Master’s of Science in Computer Science (MS-CS) and its thesis option. The MS-CS degree’s project option provides students more application-oriented experience.

The Department’s Master’s of Science in Information Technology (MS-IT) provides students state of the art training in the design and utilization of IT systems. Many students who pursue the MS-IT are working IT professionals. Courses for both degrees are offered in the evenings.

Costs at UTPA are among the lowest in the United States, and both the University and Department provide a number of programs of financial aid, including employment on campus. Many students are attracted to the benefits offered by the region’s warm climate and the “small city” feel of Edinburg and McAllen, Texas.

Application to both the University and Department is through a single online application. Students with a bachelor's degree in any field may enter either program. Information about the application process is available here and at the University’s Office of Graduate Studies.
