ABET Accreditation

What is ABET?

    • Federation of 30 professional societies (science, engineering, computing, technology)  that want to ensure quality – in both educational programs as well as graduates of those programs entering their respective professions
    • Does not accredit the university or college – this is done by regional or national accreditation agencies or other quality assurance agencies – ABET accredits specialized programs (i.e., computer science, civil engineering, industrial hygiene, etc.)
    • Accredits 2,800 specialized technical programs worldwide

What is accreditation?

    • Peer-review process that examines various aspects of your program: program outcomes and goals, program content, faculty, facilities, student-support services, etc.
    • Not a ranking system

Why do schools want programs accredited?

    • Helps improve the quality of their programs and the students’ educational experiences
    • Prestige – program accreditation helps attract the best students and faculty

Why should students care?

    • Your program meets the quality standards set by the profession
    • Helps students and parents choose quality programs
    • Your program is recognized by others – required for entry into many graduate programs, state or professional licensure, and certification boards
    • Employers recognize ABET, and recruit graduates from ABET-accredited programs
